Local SEO for small businesses: what you actually need
SEO is one of the most misused words in the industry. For a small business that gets customers from the local area, local SEO is simpler than it sounds: a few things, done properly.
Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website
When someone searches “plumber Jessheim” or “cleaning Lillestrøm”, they often see the map with businesses before they see regular results. Your profile is what shows up there. It should have:
- the right main category and services
- the right address, or the area you cover
- opening hours and a phone number that are correct
- real photos of your work, not stock photos
- customer reviews, and replies to them
The website must name the place and the services
Google has to understand what you do and where. A page that says “quality and service at every step” gives Google nothing to match. A page that says “we renovate bathrooms and kitchens in Jessheim, Ullensaker and Nes” does. Write the towns you actually work in and the services you actually offer, in plain words.
Speed matters more than you think
Slow websites lose visitors before they have read anything, and Google takes into account how the page feels on mobile. Websites built on heavy templates often load a lot of code you never use. A simple, tidy page with compressed images is faster and easier for Google to read.
What you don’t need
- expensive SEO packages with monthly reports you don’t understand
- fifty blog posts about everything
- promises of first place on Google. Nobody can promise that.
A well-built website, the right information and a complete Google profile do most of the work.
How I think about it
In the Growth package, from NOK 15,900 excl. VAT, I set up local SEO and Google Business Profile together with the website, and I write the text myself. You see the front page finished before you pay anything.

Questions about local SEO
How long does local SEO take?
It varies. The profile and the website can be set up properly quickly, but it often takes weeks or months before you see an effect in search. The result depends on the competition where you are.
Do I need a Google Business Profile if I have a website?
Yes. For local searches the profile is often the first thing customers see, so it should be complete either way.
Do I have to write a blog to be found?
No. For most local businesses a good website and a complete profile matter more than many blog posts.
Can you guarantee first place on Google?
No, and be sceptical of anyone who promises it. I make sure the foundation is right.
